Upgrade (not replace) MacBook Pro 2017 Keyboard

Hello,

I own a 2017 13’’ MacBook pro (two thunderbolts no touch bar) bought in Jan/2018 and I absolutely hate the keyboard. Hate the sound it makes, I hate how little displacement of the keys. I've even had trouble with some keys getting stuck, especially the delete key. Sometimes I even go back to working on my MPB 2011 just to remember how good Apple’s keyboards were. However, I have noticed that the newer MacBook pro’s (2020-onwards) keyboard is noticeably better. I was wondering if Apple can install a 2020 MacBook Pro keyboard system on a MacBook Pro 2017. An upgrade of sorts. Is this service available through Apple?

Best,

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

It is not possible with anyone, Apple or a third-party. If you want a new keyboard, you can purchase a bluetooth one or a new MacBook.

Cheers,

Historically, Apple have never done upgrades to existing device; they have only replaced "in kind"—meaning exactly what was there at time of manufacture.

Modern Retina MBP keyboards are almost inseparable from the upper deck. Normally if you have a keyboard problem, the entire deck is replaced and that includes the keyboard battery, trackpad, and possibly the logic board. Even if Apple would do the work, the parts cost of the deck assembly alone would be the better part of what it would take to buy a new MBP with the keyboard you like.

You can ask Apple (they won't see your post here) but I am fairly sure that the keyboard you now have is that computer's "forever" keyboard.

Wishful thinking on your part, but not possible.

See if you qualify:

You do have an option of trading in the 2017 Mac to get past the butterfly keyboard— beginning with the 16" MBP introduced the "magic" scissors keyboard— Apple Trade In - Apple
