Does the encryption increase the overall backup size?

Does the encryption increase the overall backup size? The reason I am asking is becuase I have a 256GB phone, my phone storage shows 195GB used and when i encrypt the backup to my PC, the backup size shows 279GB!! thats way over the phone capacity. This is preventing me to restore this backup to a new phone that has 256GB capacity. Can someone pls help
