Thanks. It is a MacBook Pro Model: A1278. Purchased 2/28/12. If this is to old for High Sierra to update does that mean it can’t be used at all? Tried to load Lion as the original system but it was prevented from loading.
Date purchased is not really relevant - the model year of the device is. Here is a list of all A 1278 spanning several years:

Pick out yours and post the info.
The latest can go higher than 10.13, but at this point, we don't know.
Also go to the Apple > about this Mac > and see if there is a Model ID shown. Post that if you can find it.
and, High Sierra is 10.13.x - that is much newer than Lion which was 10.7.x. Why would you want to reinstall the original OS?
Another thing: just because you cannot upgrade the OS, the computer can be used. Websites may no longer load because your browser version is too outdated though.

Seeking an OS that would work with Microsoft Office 365. It's update wouldn't work with High Sierra unless I updated it, which I couldn't, so tried to go back to Lion, which also wouldn't install. Trying anything. Now trying to clean everything so personal information would not exist on it. Is there an easy way to do that?
By the way, when it failed, I bought a new MackBook Air M1. Setting that up.
Thank You babowa!
MacBookPro is cleaned up with High Sierra reinstalled, don't know which version.
All other data cleaned off.
I feel much better about it.
Thanks for sticking with me and giving me the needed link.
Couldn't have done it without you.
Keep Smiling
Care to share exact model and year of the device?
If, as you say, it will not update from High Sierra, you appear to be at the end of the line. But, we need the model/year to be sure.
Thanks - so an early 2011 can only go to 10.13.x - which appears to be where you are at?
It can't go any higher.
Why did you want to install an earlier OS?
You are welcome!
