High Sierra won't update, what MacOS will work

MacBook Pro to old to get High Sierra to update. What macOS will work?

Date purchased is not really relevant - the model year of the device is. Here is a list of all A 1278 spanning several years:

Pick out yours and post the info.


The latest can go higher than 10.13, but at this point, we don't know.


Also go to the Apple > about this Mac > and see if there is a Model ID shown. Post that if you can find it.


and, High Sierra is 10.13.x - that is much newer than Lion which was 10.7.x. Why would you want to reinstall the original OS?


Another thing: just because you cannot upgrade the OS, the computer can be used. Websites may no longer load because your browser version is too outdated though.

Seeking an OS that would work with Microsoft Office 365. It's update wouldn't work with High Sierra unless I updated it, which I couldn't, so tried to go back to Lion, which also wouldn't install. Trying anything. Now trying to clean everything so personal information would not exist on it. Is there an easy way to do that?

By the way, when it failed, I bought a new MackBook Air M1. Setting that up.
