My iMac computer upgraded to Big Sure 11.4 yesterday and now my WD HD is not working. Ran first aid with no problems. Then unmounted drive and tried to remount but received the message, "com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49244".

After I could not erase or reformat the drive, I shut down my iMac and unplugged for a couple of minutes. Restarted the computer, reselected the external drive, and requested a backup and it was done successfully. Don't know why that worked?
Restarted computer and WD HD did mount. New message is, " Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “My Passport SSD, an error occurred while copying files”. Drive is formatted in APFS Volume • APFS (Case-sensitive).
You're going to have to reformat the WD drive and format it NON-CASE SENSITIVE.
Shutting down and rebooting got rid of the ghost in the machine.
Post a screenshot of what you see when you select the WD drive in Disk Utility.
Disk utility will not let me erase and reformat. The drive worked fine before updating Big Sur 11.3.1 to 11.4.
My first thought is that the drive may be failing, even though Disk Utility says it's ok. I would run Disk Utility again. if that doesn't work, I would try erasing and reformatting the disk. Then try having Time Machine do a complete new backup. Maybe someone else can offer some other suggestions.
