iMac / iPad Compatability

I'm trying to connect an iPad (ios 9.3.5) to an iMac (os 10.14.4)

Am I flogging a dead horse here?

The iPad isn't showing in the finder - just wondering if this is an OS/iOS incompatibility issue or if there's another explanation.

Can't upgrade the OS on either device btw, so that's not an option...
