Quicktime Player encountered and error while recording your screen

Hi,

I have a similar problem as described in this conversation: Quicktime not working/ not recording screen. Screen recording worked fine until recently. But now Quicktime tells me "Quicktime Player encountered and error while recording your screen. Try using the Screenshot app instead." I've tried using the Screenshot app, but this app also fails - the only difference is, it doesn't give me any warning or alert.

Two things might be related:

  • I've installed and uninstalled two screen recording-apps via Setapp: Capto and Cleanshot X
  • The last time I successfully used Quicktime for a screen recording I had a eGPU attached to my (Intel) Mac Mini.

Of course I tried rebooting, also using the eGPU again, again installing and then uninstalling the other two screen capturing apps (which do succeed in recording the screen), booting in safe mode and then booting back normally... Also in the mean time I updated my Mac to MacOS 11.4 - that didn't change things either. I don't have two instances of Quicktime, as was the case in this conversation. And, I'm just trying to record actions in the Finder, not an app that might block recording.

Maybe making a fresh start under a new user account is a solution, or doing a fresh install of MacOS. But then I should reinstall so much other software and scripts, I really hope to avoid that.

Until recently recording my screen in Quicktime Player worked fine, so, is there any way to wipe the (hidden) settings of this app? Does anyone know?

Thanks for all the feedback!

Martin.

Salutations martinv040,

Thank you for taking the time to visit the Apple Support Communities! It seems that QuickTime Player encountered and error while screen recording. We will be honored to assist you!

Please make sure all of your apps and the QuickTime app are up to date.

How to update the software on your Mac

“ If you're only unable to record the screen on your Mac when using specific apps, we'd recommend confirming the apps allow recording. If you need to contact an app developer, please see How to contact an app developer.

If you've confirmed that an app allows you to record their windows, but you're still unable to do so, we'd recommend creating a new user account to test recording the screen in QuickTime Player, as well as using the Screenshot toolbar to record the screen. This link to our macOS User Guide can help with how to create a new user account:

Have a good day!

Hi Mario,

Thanks for your reply, but all my apps and MacOS are up to date. And as I wrote: recording fails while recording the Finder, there's no specific app involved.

I can do a screen recording using a separate user account, so it's clearly something in my main account on this Mac. Normally I can remove and reinstall an app or trash some plist-files or other items to solve something like this. But as Quicktime comes with MacOS, it seems that cannot be done.

So my question is: how can I 'reset' Quicktime so it will behave as before in this user account and does behave currently in the separate user account? Is there anything I can clean or trash or .... ?

Thank you very much :)

Martin.
