My mother is getting her first iPad and she has never used a smartphone. I just upgraded to iPhone 12 and am wondering if she will have trouble with no home button. Maybe that’s just me because I’m used to it? I’ve adapted over a week or so but think it might be hard to tell her how to do things.
So, newest iPad or an older refurbished model?
If you feel the lack of a Home button might be an issue, there is the option of the 8th generation iPad.

Be sure to get a very sturdy, protective case or cover for the iPad. Our daughter had her iPad in a nursing home and it survived several unfortunate mishaps only because it was well-shielded!
I agree with MichelPM! I've tried to teach my 87 year old husband and it is a lost cause. He hasn't gotten beyond a corded land-line phone. Unless she has had some experience with computers, she will have a hard time understanding an iPad.
Her retirement community is switching to doing most things on the TouchTown app. IT support will help her with the app. Family members use FaceTime when someone is there with her. She was pretty computer literate until she broke her wrist and can’t type anymore, but no smartphone experience.
I think at 93, she will have issues with any computing device.
Why do you think that she needs a tablet device?
I expect that she will need lots of help. Since she will have help, look at the model stedman1 suggested or check the refurbished section on Apple's web site store. That section often has some real bargains. It won't matter to her whether it's the latest model.
