I keep getting told my Mac mini running OS11 will update overnight: but it never does, although' sleep' function remains on. Any idea why?

have you gone into SystemPreferences>EnergySaver and check if power nap is enabled?
Check in System Preferences >> Software Updates. It there a message saying Ready to Install. If Yes, click Install Now. It may request Computer Password to proceed
