Why does Apple Watch not track cycling accurately in Exercise Ring

Today I completed 12.3 mile bike ride over 1 he and 37 minutes at a 7.5 mph rate burning 300 calories at an average heart rate of 123 bpm. I wo in le expect that my exercise circle would close but it only recorded 27 minutes.

According to everything I’ve read on this forum, exercise is tracked as a brisk walk requiring movement of the watch beating arm. When cycling, this arm is not moving. GPS movement and HR should be indicators of brisk activity.

How does one accomplish closing the exercise app for activities that don’t move the watch bearing arm? Brisk activity should be calculated using HR and/or distance/time versus movement of arm. Apple needs to make this change in order to satisfy the many users that don’t just walk for exercise.

I don’t want to have to track Other as my workout in order to close my exercise ring. That defeats the purpose of having an Apple Watch which tracks, maps and records my health data.

Vert frustrated that I can close my exercise ring after spending the day crocheting (literally getting no exercise) but I can’t close it with exercise that I did today. What’s the point??

Thanks for the quick response. This info is certainly helpful, and it sounds like you’ve done your own research. However, this criteria for qualification of a brisk walk seems extreme. This should really be determined at an individual level based on age and what ones personal MHR would be. No one I know walks briskly at a 9.8 mph pace. My MHR is 152 so 75% of that is 114 which is under what my average 123 bpm was during my ride. Looks like you have to maintain this rate PLUS keep up the 9.8 mph pace in order to meet the criteria of the exercise circle. Pretty strict criteria for cycling when compared to doing a brisk walk. I’m able to close my exercise circle whenever I walk 5 miles and I know I’m not doing a 9.8 mph pace on my walks. Just simply getting out and riding 12 miles in 1.5 hours should qualify as exercise. At least it does in my mind and I guess that’s all that really counts. I can always come back home and crochet for a half hour to close up my green ring!
