Can you direct airdrop files to a Macbook Pro to somewhere other than Downloads (ie. an external drive)

I am trying to download a file from Photos that exceeds the amount of free space on my hard drive. I also have the file on my iphone. The download keeps crashing about 75% of the way. I thought I would try to Airdrop the file to an external drive on the Mac.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

Hello Macnewbee,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you have a question regarding AirDrop. We would be happy to help!

Check out the following support article, which provides some information about AirDrop Use AirDrop on your Mac

When using AirDrop, after you tap or click Accept to save the files, they do save to your Downloads folder. There is not a setting to change where the files save automatically. This does mean you will need to have space available. To optimize your current data check out these steps: Optimize storage space on your Mac

Cheers!
