ios update problem with game center

I just updated my ipad and my iphone 12 to the newest software (14.6). I have verified it installed. Now I can't switch into another account on game center. When I log in using that info, it says that "Software update required. Update this ipad (iphone, says it there too) to the latest version of ios to sign in"

I have shut down both devices and still get the message. Please help
