12 Pro Max screen dimming with auto brightness off

I have noticed an issue with my iPhone where the screen would suddenly turn darker when in a darker environment but when I hold the phone to the light it gets brighter but the colours look slightly more washed out.

Auto brightness is off.

Dark appearance changes wallpaper is off.

True tone is off.

Night shift is off.

Colour filters are off.

Dark mode is off.

Face ID and passcode attention awareness is on but issue still occurs no matter how I mess with attention settings.

Any ideas on what’s causing this? Going to an apple store is my last option since it is very far away. Please help.

Yes, well it effects all apps on the phone, even including this one as I type. The screen gets a brighter grey when facing the light and then goes dark when away from the light. This is very annoying in med light levels because it keeps switching back and forth. I have checked all settings which can influence brightness as stated above.

edit: I tried this with auto-brightness on and I’m still noticing huge jumps in brightness when moving it in and out of the light. The brightness bar does NOT move when the brightness jumps.
