It sounds as though you're display is auto-adjusting causing your display to dim. Apple Support Communities is a wonderful place for help! When you're noticing the brightness dim is this happening when the lighting in the area you're located changes? For example, does the room get darker or are transitioning between different lighting conditions? If so, auto-brightness maybe enabled causing this to occur.
