No, I was not using any specific spot of the Touch Bar or messing with the Touch Bar settings. So far, this happened after the MacBook woke up from sleep. I will the safe mode suggestion next time.
For the Intel Mac— sleep/Touchbar issues try resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
if no resolve
Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

If resetting the SMC and NVRAM does not sort the issue then you most likely are looking at a hardware issue.
In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

I only hit the TouchBar problem after upgrade to Big Sur 11.4. I never have this problem with Catalina. I depend on the Escape key a lot. When the TouchBar is gone, I can't use the Escape key. Remap another key to Escape does not work. I tried to map all of the keys listed in "Modifier Keys...". None of them work.
Yes, since I upgraded to the BS11.4 we too have had this issue in a number of our machines. There is neither rhyme nor reason to the reasons the Touch Bar stops working. It just goes dark. Sometimes, it is after re-opening the MBPro, or sometimes mid use with Excel or Safari, or Word.
Just makes no sense.
I found a workaround this issue without reboot to fix it. I did the following:
Go to Setting Preferences -> Keyboard. On the Keyboard tab, change the "Touch Bar shows" to "Expanded Control Strip"
Then click on "Customize Control Strip..." button. Drag and remove everything from the touch bar. Click Done to get out. After this there should be nothing in the touch bar except for the 'esc' key.
By configure the touch bar as above the rate of hitting the problem occurs less but still very annoying. When you hit the problem, put the MacBook to sleep and wake it up after a minute or so. After woke up, the 'esc' key should appear on the touch bar. This sometime doesn't work. I usually shutdown some apps. In my case, I shutdown (total quit) Slack and Cisco AnyConnect then put the Mac to sleep again for a minute or so. I have been doing this for more than a month without reboot.
I use the Launchpad from the touch bar a lot. What I am using now is the short cut keys control + option + command + l (lower case letter L) to get to the Launchpad.
Hope this helps until Apple recognizes this is the problem and addresses it.

Reset the SMC does not work. The problem comes back after 3 days. When the problem occurrs, the touch bar option to set the touch bar function is also gone.
I will try to reset the NVRAM/PRAM next.
Reset NVRAM/PRAM also didn't work. The problem is back this morning (2 days).
