How do I get the iPad to recognize an exclamation point as I write? The iPad converts my script “!” to a typed capital I or a 1 or a 1. (Number plus punctuation). Is it impossible?

Not just a tiny dot but scribble in a much larger, prominent dot below the vertical lne.
