my finder has not been responding for days, and even when i relaunch it it immediately returns to being not responsive. it started while i was backing up my files on an external hard drive. is there still some way to get my files backed up? if it’s relevant, i have no idea if i had time machine running.

ok support helped me figure it out and if anyone encounters the same problem, we did a safe boot by restarting the computer and holding down shift key while it restarted and then logging into safe mode and then restarting again and then logging in normally and then saving some old files on my hard drive onto my computer and then clearing my hard drive so i could reformat it to be compatible w time machine and then using time machine to back it all up
