iPhone 12 storage exchange

I just received an iPhone 12 for my birthday but the issue was that it was 64GB and I want to change it to 128GB, I was told it is possible and I would just have to pay the difference. I have not used the phone but I did open the box however, will apple still let me go forward with the exchange?

You can generally return your iPhone within 14 days, as it is a birthday present, you may be unable to return it if the device has been with you for 14 days. (If the person who gifted you the iPhone bought it in advance). You can then return for a full refund and buy the new device, but of course, this will cost a little bit more.
