iPhone message: “iPhoto” needs to be updated. The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of iOS

24 hours ago, my iPhone updated to iOS 14.6. I’ve experienced several challenges with it, but now I’ve received a pop-up window with the following:

iPhone message: “iPhoto” needs to be updated. The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of iOS

and two choices: keep or delete.

I do NOT want to lose my photos, so I chose Keep and then attempted to update the app. The app will not properly update and the same message reappears.

I do have automatic iCloud backup on.

Questions:

  1. should I delete and reinstall the app?
  2. Will my photos be ok?
  3. why would an update install if my iPhoto app wasn’t ready for it?

Kimberly, I believe what happened to you, me and countless others, is Apple switched from using the iPhoto app to the Photos app in 2015. However, the iPhoto app remained on our devices. I personally buried the iPhoto app in a "Utilities" folder on my phone since probably 2015. I didn't even realize it was there until I received the same pop-up as you and then searched to see if it was in fact, legitimate. Turns out it is.

My concerns are the same as yours:

Can iPhoto be safely removed without affecting pictures stored on your device or in iCloud? Has it been tested or proven that iPhoto is a legacy app with no hooks on current media whereby deleting the app, along with associated data, will not delete our photos? After all, I would consider pictures as "associated data".

Reasonable questions. So yeah, an answer that isn't snarky would be helpful. I disagree with the "Apple recommended" response as it shows no understanding of the actual problem and an genuine disinterest in trying to understand the problem. The only purpose of that response was to show you that you are wrong and they are right. Further evidenced by the follow up "Wrong - " response.

Hello. I have had the same message and the same concern of “what if I delete it…”

Like it has been noted, iPhoto has not been used. Even after forcing it to update it still would tell me that it doesn’t work with this iOS.

The catch here is why has Apple let it stay if it’s not used and then still give all those warning about data?!

Well, I made sure my photos were backed up and backed up my entire phone on the computer. Then I ignored the warnings and deleted iPhotos. Everything else is just fine. None of my photos or videos are gone.

SravanKrA: iPhoto is, by definition, a 1st-party app and that doesn’t charge because it’s deprecated.

A third-party app is […] created by a developer that isn't the manufacturer of the device the app runs on or the owner of the website that offers it. You could think of those as first-party apps, although that term isn't used very widely.
