If you have Office 2011 for Mac or before WILL NOT run, For Catalina Office 2016 for Mac needs to be v15.35 or later.

The current Office for Mac; Office 365 or Office 2019 (One-time purchase) are OK with Catalina/Big Sur

Use LibreOffice, then. It’s free. https://www.libreoffice.org/

The Apple iWork apps Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can read and write many Microsoft Office documents. Free.

With Microsoft Office 2021 due out this year, there won’t be much of an upgrade path left for Office 2019, as another consideration here. This if you want a full purchase, and do not prefer an Office 365 subscription, nor LibreOffice or iWork.
