iphone 12 won't ring when bluetooth headphones are connected

When my bluetooth headphones are connected to my iphone 12mini the phone won't audibly ring for a call or text. Silent button on side of the phone isn't on. I've looked in settings to try to see if there's something I can change. I swear that my old 6s used to ring even if the headphones were connected! I keep missing texts and calls. This is harder for me to notice because the 12 no longer has the symbol on the home page alerting me to bluetooth connection so I don't always realize the headphones are still connected until I've missed a bunch of texts and calls. Is there a way to fix this?
