Phone auto-adjusting brightness with auto-brightness off

I have always had this problem on my iphone XS since I got it a couple years ago. Often times, when my brightness is all the way up, my phone will “auto-adjust” the brightness level, *without* actually adjusting the brightness controller. It’s a bit hard to explain, but essentially the brightness will auto go down randomly, while the brightness meter/controller will still say it is at full brightness. However, when I take the meter between halfway to all the way brightness, there is *no* change at all in the brightness, and it will not allow me to make my screen brighter than halfway. Once I move the brightness meter down beyond halfway, it will begin to lower the brightness, however it will only increase the brightness to halfway, and then I can continue to move the brightness controller up but my screen will not brighten anymore. Then, within a couple hours, the phone will “re-brighten” and allow me to properly utilize the brightness controls and take the brightness all the way up. My auto brightness is turned off, I have restarted/reset my iPhone, and done many other fixes but nothing works. When it happens, I basically have to deal with a darker screen because it will not allow me to make the screen brighter beyond halfway bright. It’s weird because it’s not adjusting the brightness how auto-brightness does (which lowers the brightness and also lowers the brightness control/meter thing), it lowers the brightness without doing that and basically makes the top half of the brightness control slider “unavailable” per say. If anyone has any insight, I would be very happy to hear. Thank you!

Hello JFab19,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We are happy to help you!

We understand that you are having issues with you brightness working intermittently.

There are a few reasons this could be going on, so we have taken the time to provide you with a few helpful steps:

Adjust the brightness and color temperature on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

"Adjust brightness and color temperature in Settings

  1. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness.
  2. Drag the slider to the right or left to adjust the brightness.

From here, you can turn on Dark Mode, which is designed to make the screen easier on your eyes. Dark Mode uses a dark color scheme that works system wide, including with the apps that come with your device and with many third-party apps.

True Tone,* which is on by default, uses advanced sensors to adjust the color and intensity of your display to match the ambient light, so that images appear more natural.

If you turn off True Tone, the display keeps color and intensity constant, regardless of changes in the ambient light.

You can also turn on Night Shift, which adjusts the colors of your display to the warmer end of the spectrum—making the display easier on your eyes. To adjust the color temperature to be warmer or colder, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift and use the color-temperature slider.

About brightness levels

iOS devices use an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness levels based on the light conditions around you. The sensor lowers brightness in dark locations and raises brightness in light locations. The auto-brightness feature is on by default.

When auto-brightness is on, you'll notice that the brightness slider on your device moves according to changing light conditions.

You can turn auto-brightness on or off in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. To reset the auto-brightness settings, turn off auto-brightness and then turn it back on. "

Use Night Shift on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Low Power mode could also be enabled which helps to reduce the amount of power (in this case, brightness) being used on your device to assist with battery life.

Use Low Power Mode to save battery life on your iPhone

We hope this finds you well!

Cheers!

Corrie84,

This response did not help in the slightest and was rather you instructing me how to work the brightness feature. I already know how, that is not my issue. My issue is that the brightness feature is essentially broken. At times, it auto adjusts brightness WITHOUT adjusting the brightness slider. Meaning I may be at full brightness and my phone lowers my brightness, but the SLIDER is still all the way up. It then will not give me the option to actually change the brightness, and I can move the slider between halfway and all the way up and it will not actually adjust the screen brightness.
