Yes, you can upgrade it by removing the 5870 and installing a Metal capable graphics card.
The easiest one to find, and reasonably priced is the EVGA GeForce GTX 680. It must look specifically like this one:

There are LOTS of GTX 680 boards available. Most are for Windows computers. This is the only model designed for the Mac Pro. I had one in a 2010.

Mac Pro (Late 2013; Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable graphics cards)
You're welcome.
Personally I've never owned a Mac Pro so I really have no recommendation. Hopefully someone who has, will.
You're welcome. You may want to ask in the Mac Pro community…
Thank you your rapid response sincerely appreciated .
I have a ATI Radeon 5870 which is not listed as metal compatible . I’m a musician using Logic Pro x not a gamer .
Which one would you recommend that is metal compatible readily available and not too expensive ?
Thanks again I’ll try and search eBay , you’ve stopped me from experiencing potential issues regarding my card when upgrading to Mojave so I’m very grateful .
Thanks Kurt sincerely appreciated I’ll check them out and hopefully upgrade smoothly .
