I have received a message on my phone that reads like scam and not an authorized Apple update

That definitely doesn’t look legitimate. So, we recommend getting rid of the pop-up message. A good article to take a look at to take a look at will be Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams.
