Mojave security update 2021-004 breaks screen sharing after system has been idle

After installing Mojave security update 2021-004 (on 6/5/21) there is odd behavior of both screen sharing and Microsoft Remote Desktop. Immediately after rebooting, I'm able to use screen sharing to view the screen of another Mac on my local network. I'm also able to use Microsoft RDP over VPN to connect to servers at work. However, if I leave my machine idle for a hour, or so, I can no longer make a new screen sharing connections nor can I make a new RDP connection (existing connections are OK).

Hardware: MacBook Pro, 15 inch 2019, 2.3 GHz core i9, 32 GB RAM

OS version: 10.14.6

Energy saver: [x] Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off

Other updates installed on 6/5/21:

Safari 14.1.1

OneDrive 21.083.0425

Any help would be appreciated.

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...

The important part of the above is...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

Hi @Ed_Heel,

An in-place OS reinstall from the recovery partition reinstalls the OS, with all of the latest updates, leaving all of your settings and custom extensions in tact. During the installation there are checks for compatibility of custom extensions.

Assuming you have Intel silicon, shut down your system, then press CMD-R while restarting, until the apple logo appears.

Good luck!

I'm not aware of a recent Windows update. Since my connection issues include Synology NAS devices that run their own OS, I don't believe it is a Windows RDP server issue.

I did delete the file you suggested, restarted, but alas, the same badness occurred after an hour, or so. I also deleted all of my system cache files, from /Library/Caches, except com.apple.kext.caches, booted into Safe Mode, then restarted in normal mode. No benefit. I'm currently doing an in-place OS reinstall, and I'll let you know tomorrow if it helps.

thanks again!

Thanks, @BDAqua:

I've created an EtreCheck report:

I have not yet booted into Safe Mode but will do so tonight. I don't expect to have the appropriate drivers available in Safe Mode to do RDP.

Another piece of information: After boot I can connect to NAS devices via afp:// or smb:// but after an hour or so I can no longer make any new connections. The existing connections are still active.
