With captions you have very little control over how they are displayed.

Captions work differently from titles.

AFAICT you cannot export captions as video.

There are tools by spherico, a frequent contributor, that allow one to convert captions to titles.

If you want to export titles as a separate video file, that is something that can be done (though NOT using the Animation codec, which is rather old - you should use ProRes 4444 for exporting video with transparency).

To do that, you would disable all other clips in the timeline and export a master file to ProRes 4444.

If you want full control over the appearance of text, you should use titles instead of captions.

You can't determine how any device will display the captions.

Captions are useful if you want to ability to turn them on or off. If that is not how you intend to use them, use titles instead.

I don't use Resolve, but I believe that a typical workflow would involve exporting XML.

Thank you very much, Luis, for clarifying the limits of captions in fcpX. It's too bad because the font is too light without the background field, which looks awful for the image, and spacing of this only font is also not good.

There's a program called Quick Caption that is said to work well with fcpx (in which I can have more options with fonts and format). I've downloaded it, but how do I make it work with fcpx timeline to produce the subtitles?

the film I have just finished editing is 135mins long and it is in a 740x480 format that will be upscaled to 2K in the final output, should I still use the ProRes 4444 for exporting the separate subtitles file? (the file is for my color grader who uses a Resolve Da Vinci). Also since the film is long, disabling all the other clips may be quite a bit of work...
