Music keeps downloading over cellular data

Hello,

When adding songs to a playlist/library it will automatically download the song on my iPhone. I disabled using cellular data to download the song. But unfortunately when adding songs to a playlist when using no wifi, the songs will download over 4G (it will use a lot of data…)

The only solution was disabling cellular data for the Music app (this also includes streaming/searching)

I included a screenshot of my settings (in dutch) here you can see I disabled ‘download via mobiel’ (which means ‘download over cellular’).

Does anyone have a solution?

I’m currently using iOS version 14.6

Hey Jesseb99,

Thanks for posting your question in Apple Support Communities!

With the latest update it has been expected that your cellular data usage will increase due to the added capability of streaming both Lossless and Dolby Atmos formatted music. If you have concerns regarding the amount of cellular data your device is using you can disable the Dolby Atmos and Apple Lossless quality formats which should reduce the amount of data Apple Music is using.

Hello Chris,

Many thanks for your response!

I see you can adjust the settings for streaming audio.

But the actual problem is not streaming the music but it is downloading the music. Even though I disabled using cellular data for downloading, the music app keeps downloading songs Over cellular data. Resulting in a high data ussage.

Hope this explanation clarifies my problem.

Hi JesseB99,

If you would like to stop the music from automatically being downloaded locally onto your device you will need to turn off the Automatic Download setting. You can do this by going to Settings > Music > Automatic Download.

Like you say. I was adding some songs to my library and my iPhone downloaded it straight away (over 4G).

Resulting in getting a message from my provider saying I spilled all my data

I also noticed another bug. When disabling wifi and cellular my downloaded songs stop playing after exactly 15 seconds. And if I turn on cellular the songs continues. Maybe this is also related to your data issue?

Hey JesseB99,

This playback issue could be related to your data or could be an issue with your Apple Music app. You should try removing the songs from your library and downloading them again over your Wi-fi connection.

Yeah, I’m also having this exact same problem on 14.6. Don’t know how long it’s been doing it, but last month I had 2+ GB of data usage from Apple Music, and now I’m wondering if this is the culprit

Yes, That could be a bypass for the problem.

Normally you should turn off ‘download over cellular’ which in this case doesn’t work.
