Lossless Audio on Apple TV HD

Am I reading this correctly that I will not get the lossless option on my ATV HD even though it runs 14.6?

AirPlay ist capped at 48khz, that means anything you do with airplay can be lossless (CD quality) but not High-Res lossless. BUT even if you could stream lossless to your older ATV, my understanding is that this device can’t output lossless so I guess it will be downsampled?

Apple really dug themselves into a nice hole here, giving the market lossless because it demands that but not being able to play lossless on their own headphones (because bluetooth) and the majority of the aTVs (because I should buy a 4K I guess, so it’s really my fault), . Instead of offering a solution they try to distract us with “hey look over here, 3D Audio is faaaantastic”, which it ABSOLUTELY is not, it sounds rubbish in 98% of the cases. I like my Apple products, but this is one of the cases where they frustrate me!

Yeah I’m seeing that and I agree. Apple pushed the Bluetooth thing so hard, got rid of the headphone jack but now telling us to get lossless you need plug in headphones. That’s bordering on hypocrisy. And I agree with your view on spatial. Unless you have a true atmos set up with all the speakers it’ll never be the same. That however is not just an Apple problem. I am seeing so many non Apple devices saying they do atmos and it’s not gonna be the same.

I will say, credits where credits due, I do find the quality of the sound is very good with my home theatre set up even though my ATVHD isn’t lossless. I do wonder if ATV does play at a higher sample or processes the music differently.

Thanks for the reminder, been meaning to plug in my iphone to my set up via aux and hear if I can notice a difference, I probably might. Apple needs to better hopefully an update can go for ATVHD for it to work. It's werid cuz it's one part, I shouldn't care that much because everything was fine, but this FOMO because I can't enjoy the new feature lest I spend 180 dollars again on a new ATV4k when my HD works perfectly fine and has been for over 5 years *knocks on wood*

I agree, it’s not that the sound quality is bad. And tbh I am not listening to music saying „aha! That’s an AAC file, I can clearly hear that“ but on my system the difference is noticeable when I listen to the same track in lossy and lossless formats (I even tried it “blind” with a friend, play the same track one after the other and you can tell which is which afterwards (!), we both couldn’t tell the difference between CD quality and Hi-Res btw). And you’re spot in the Atmos thing, amazing technology for professional theatre installation - for the average consumer useless marketing claim.
