im trying to restore my imac to factory settings. ive erased the macintosh HD drive and am now trying to reinstal macOS Catalina but i get this error message that the target volume is part of an incomplete system and can not be installed to? help....

Sounds like you did not properly erase and format the Macintosh HD.


For a do over, you need to startup in macOS Recovery and Reformat the Macintosh HD,

as per > https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208496


Then install the offered macOS version and upgrade that version to Catalina.

For older macOS versions of Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave and Catalina,
