Iphone forces me to enter password for every app that needs to update

for every app that needs to be updated, my iphone XR with iOS 14.6 forces me to enter my Apple ID password.

I have tried the solution noted here (Cannot update all apps with ios 14 - Apple Community) but without success.

I've now 18 apps to update and am loathe to have to enter 18 times my (long) password.

TBH i can't understand why iOS needs my password to update the apps if the App Store is supposed to be secure?

thanks for anyone's help in solving this extremely irritating bug.

Hello Tazkikamobile,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We understand that when updating apps, you’re prompted for your Apple ID password and you’d like to change this setting. We’d be happy to help.

Check out the information in Require a password for App Store and iTunes purchases, “If you don't want to enter a password when you download free items, follow the steps below and turn off password protection for free items.”

Try those steps and keep us posted on the outcome.

Take care!

Tazkikamobile,

Thank you for providing all of that information. We have a few follow-up questions we'd like to ask:

When you're prompted to enter a password for the app updates, is it asking for the password of the Apple ID you're currently signed into Media & Purchases with? Or is it a different Apple ID?

Do you have any unpaid balance in the App Store or iTunes Store? Here's how to See your purchase history for the App Store, iTunes Store, and more. We would also suggest checking your payment methods. Refer to the steps in Change, add, or remove Apple ID payment methods to see if a payment method couldn't be charged for a previous order.

Keep us posted.

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately that's not the issue :(

It's as follows:

  • i go to the appstore, there's x apps waiting to be updated (where x >> than 1)
  • i select 'update all' to update them all at once
  • i'm requested to enter my password to update all apps (fair enough, i guess)
  • but i'm then requested to enter my PW for *every* app that needs updating!

recently i had 18 apps to update, and so have to enter my password 18 times, even when selecting 'update ALL'!!

this behaviour is fairly recent (since this year?), before the 'update all' worked perfectly.

My actions:

  • settings > media & purchasing > password settings:
    1. require after 15 mins: ticked
    2. free download - require password: off
  • settings > screen time > content & privacy restrictions:
    1. iTunes & Appstore purchases: 'require password' set to 'don't require'

for most users on the various fora this worked. Not for me.

Please can you help to fix this?

Hi i_rina,

in response to your questions:

  1. i only use one single Apple ID on my iPhone (it’s a corporate device so strictly personal)
  2. no unpaid balance
  3. payment method unchanged

this irritating issue only recently started (around February?) most likely due to an iOS upgrade.

and apparently I’m not alone 🤔

thanks for any help you can provide, as I’ve another 15 apps to update now 🤪

Tazkikamobile,

You mention this being a corporate device. Is there a mobile device management (MDM) profile installed on your device? If so, the configuration setting for the App Store and subsequent app downloads by the MDM and your employer may require the password to be entered for all apps. We would advise reaching out to your employer, perhaps your IT or MDM administrator to confirm this. If this is not an expected setting for the MDM, reach out to Apple Support: Get Support.

Have a great day!
