For the keys to register at all I need to slam them. this is ether the worst keyboard ever or I need to change some settings I can not find

The Smart Keyboard key sensitivity is not software configurable.
The Apple smart keyboard cover has a lot of known issues and shortcomings, that Apple has really never addressed.
The very reasons of which I never, ever purchased one of these and sought out better, third party keyboard maker alternatives.

If still under its free, one-year warranty, search online to locate and call contact your nearest, “local” Apple Store location to try/attempt to make an appointment to get your Apple smart keyboard diagnosed and possible replacement.
