GPS arrow won't go away

The little GPS arrow won't go away on my iPhone 4, even when I've completely closed out all the apps (none left in background mode).

It went on last night when I was fiddling with an app, then never closed. Does it matter? It doesn't seem to be draining the battery.

Thanks!

I'm having this issue with the Camera app on the 3g phone. Only if I turn of Location Services for the app does GPS turn off. Otherwise it drains the whole battery in about 1 hour from full. I've tried restarting the phone after turning off Location Services, no change, and I can't delete and reinstall this app =) A restore may fix it but I'm tired of doing that for stupid little bugs like this. Has anyone come across this issue and found a resolution?

I'm also having this problem, with one interesting catch. I have the weather channel app (the paid one, in fact) and I started having this issue with the gps arrow not going away. Upon learning that it had to do with this app, I updated it and opened it up, as per the app's instructions, but the gps arrow never vanished upon exiting out. Even force closing the weather app had no effect. Furthermore, neither did uninstalling the app, or even restoring my phone.

Now I have no idea what to do... Any suggestions??

1. Go to "Settings"

2. Go to "Location Services"

3. Make sure Location Services are turned "ON"

4. Scroll down the list and check if any services have locator arrows next to their "ON" slider

5. Any services with a purple loctor arrow next to them are NOT turning off

6. Manually disable any services with a purple arrow by moving the slider to "OFF"

7. Leave the services with grey arrows alone, they are behaving properly

8. You can now either continue to use the app manually or you can delete it and leave a horrible review for its maker at the app store

9. Either way you have now identified the culprit, cheers (and thank goodness, my first impression was that Apple was already going down the tubes after the passing of Steve Jobs!)

I have found that my GPS won't turn off because after doing a search on the MAPS APP it stayed on even after closing it. I found out in Location services at the bottom under SYSTEM SERVICES the TRAFFIC setting was the reason. I guess after using the MAPS APP the phone kept the GPS indicator on to measure my activity in traffic so it could use the info to show everyone else on the network the traffic stats. I guess if we all want to see where the traffic is red we have to allow the phones to use our phone to measure our speed in traffic. 🙂

In my case it was NOT the Weather Channel App or Maps. The culprit in my case was Reminders. If you have a location reminder set, the gps stays on indefinitely. You can either disable it in Location Services or change the settings in the App. The obvious solution is to keep any location reminders unchecked unless needed in the short term. Unchecking the reminder I had set immediately turned off the gps arrow.

To find out which service is currently using location go to settings , location services.

The grey arrows are ones that recently used the service.

Purple shows which is using it now.

For me it was the reminders iCloud app, after I had tried a location reminder.

Even though it had gone off and the reminder was no longer active, the arrow wouldn't go away.

This does drain the battery as its actively checking location

Only way to remove it was delete the reminder.

Worked instantly.

Just updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 5.0.1 and noticed that there is now an option to display the Location Services arrow in the status bar when "Find my iPhone" has been activated. As test I enabled this feature, logged into iCloud and activated Find my iPhone. Within 10 seconds I see the Location Services arrow in the status bar of my phone and iCloud locates my phone successfully on the map provided. Yay. But then I log out of iCloud completely and the Location Services arrow stayed lit on in the status bar. I waited about 10 minutes. I have no idea how long to wait but got fed up with the arrow and disabled Find my iPhone at which point the arrow finally disappeared from the status bar. Not sure if it would have ever turned off. WARNING: If you have Find my iPhone turned on, the Status Bar Icon is switched "OFF" by default and you will not know when or even if Location Services are running on your phone after you have completed using Find my iPhone.
