My MacAir 2019 is connected to a Dell monitor and I close up the Mac. I have external sound but no internal so can't use mic. What can I do so I can speak on Zoom calls etc?

When you close the lid on your MacBook Air then the built-in microphone is deactivated. What you can use is an external Microphone connected either via the USB-C port OR you can connect the headphones with Mic through the 3.5mm Audio port.
