Dolby Atmos on iPad Air speakers

Do the speakers on an iPad Air 4 support Dolby Atmos if you are on iOS 14.6? I see on the Dolby website that the speakers don’t support it and it is only accessible if you use headphones. Will you be able to get Dolby Atmos now or in future via the iPad Air 4 speakers?

iPad, iOS 10

Hi adis84,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you have a question about spatial audio with Dolby Atmos feature on your iPad. We're happy to help.

"If you subscribe to Apple Music, you can listen to select songs in spatial audio with Dolby Atmos." You can find this information and more details about the feature here: About spatial audio with Dolby Atmos in Apple Music

This includes information for built-in speaker as follows:

"The built-in speakers on an iPhone XR or later (except iPhone SE), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later), iPad Pro 11-inch, iPad (6th generation or later), iPad Air (3rd generation or later), or iPad mini (5th generation)."

Additionally, there is a lossless audio feature, and you can find out more about that here: About lossless audio in Apple Music

Cheers!

I seriously doubt the two stereo audio speakers are up to the task of processing Dolby Atmos audio streams/files.

I have learned the same info through videos on YouTube.

Dolby Atmos content will ONLY be apparent through a good quality set or wired headphones/earbuds OR good quality wireless headphones or earpods/Airpods.

Dolby Atmos may have a better chance of being heard through the 4 speaker system of the iPad Pro models, but I seriously doubt the same for the 2020 iPad Air 4 speakers.

Good Luck!

Hi adis84,

Thanks for the information. We're seeing the same details from the Dolby website that the iPad supports the Spatial Audio feature with headphones only.

However, the technical specifications for what is supported on your iPad here: iPad Air (4th generation) - Technical Specifications specifically the "Audio Playback" section, state it supports stereo audio or Dolby Audio up to 1008 Kbps. We recommend ensuring you have a strong network connection when playing content.

Additionally, you can test if the issue occurs when listening to from both downloaded and streaming content. The article here also has details for what is needed: Find films with 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos in the Apple TV app

Best!
