Can't shutdown iMac, message says The Finder can’t quit because an operation is still in progress on an iOS device

Recently, for no apparent reason I can't shut down my iMac 21.5 inch, late 2013 (running Catalina version 10.15.7), and get a message.

"The Finder can’t quit because an operation is still in progress on an iOS device."

To add to the puzzlement, the finder doesn't show my iPhone 6 when it is connected by cable. (Phone is running iOS12.5.3, apparently the latest it can run.)

Music shows the phone in the sidebar (whether connected by cable or not), but can't load it. Nor will it respond to an attempt to eject the iPhone

Any tips?

Hello, terrencefromcanberra.

To shut down the computer, press and hold the power button until the computer turns off. This may take 5-10 seconds. Unplug any external devices you may have connected to your computer.

Then reboot the machine in Safe mode. Press the power button, then as the start chime sounds, press and hold the <shift> key until you see the grey Apple logo. When the login screen appears, login... then shutdown the computer normally using (Apple menu) > Shut Down...

Finally, reboot the computer normally. Hopefully this will have cleared the problem.

If the problem persists, come back here and let us know so we can offer other suggestions. We like doing that. 🙂
