Perhaps this is a Faulty Device?

Probably because it is overheating or the battery is corroding. So, if it is in a case, remove it. Take this back to the seller, and see if you can return it , and get a new one. If it is Apple, then contact them, seeing if you can get this serviced. Important: be certain to lay it atop a laptop cooler, in the meantime.
