Airpods to Macbook Input Issue

Hi guys.

Does anybody know how to stop the sound input setting from automatically switching to the airpod microphones when they connect to the macbook. When this happens the sound quality goes bad until I manually change it in system preferences back to the macbook's microphone and the sound quality returns to normal. This is quite annoying when taking them out and putting them back in frequently and having to go to settings each time to resolve. Does anybody else get this issue?
