I have tried the fix supplied several months ago: in Finder preferences, I've unchecked the CDs, DVDs and IOS devices, then rechecked and my Iphone XR still doesn't show up. Any other ideas?
I've updated OS on both laptop and on the phone: running Big Sur 11.4 on the laptop and 14.6 on the Phone.
I am trying to upload Contacts from my computer to the phone: all my Exchange contacts disappeared yesterday.

Connect iPhone to Mac
Use your USB lightening cable --> Resolve USB-related alerts in iTunes - Apple Support
If unable to connect --> If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support
For your Mac --> If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod ...
Use genuine cable --> Identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning connector accessories ...

Add the email account on your device all your contacts will be back.
Contacts are neither stored locally on an iPhone nor in SIM. They are synced to an email account that you had Google, iCloud, AOL, Exchange, Outlook, Yahoo or any Other
I've ordered a usb-c to lightning cable, to see if that works. I've been using an adapter that has usb, hdmi, usb-c ports. Maybe the adapter is faulty.
