I can't get my copy and paste to work on my brand new computer

I just bought a brand new Mac book air and I can not get it to copy and paste. Trying to copy from an email to a word document and nothing shows up. Just the little icon and that does not do anything either when I click on it.

Hightlight the text in the email and Command + c of keyboard puts the text in Clipboard and focus to Word Documents and Command + v will paste the test to destination.
