Canon printer offline

I've installed a Canon printer on my Imac, connected through wireless router. Printer shows on computer and wireless network is recognized on printer. Printer is showing offline. How do I get it online?

IMac, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Reading your post I wonder if you are trying to use the USB printer queue to connect to the networked printer?

When you connect via USB to configure the network settings a USB only print queue is automatically created. When you disconnect the printer from the USB and have it connected to your wireless or wired network, you then need to add another printer queue - this one for the network connection. This is done by selecting to add a printer and using the Default Add Printer view. The MX860 should appear quickly as a Bonjour Scanner but it takes several seconds before the printer component appears. When it does it will display 'canonijnetwork' in the Kind column. Select this and the Print Using menu should change to the 'Canon MX860 series'. Now you will have two printers in your list - the networked and the USB. You may want to rename them just to make it easier to identify. This will help to ensure you select the networked printer queue when you select to print a document.

When you select to add the print in Print & Fax by clicking the + button, you will see the Add Printer browser. This has the Default, Fax, IP and Windows icons, the latter which you have mentioned.

You mention selecting the Windows view. You would only do this if the printer is connected to a Windows computer via its USB cable. But from your initial post it sounds like you have the printers wireless setting enabled and therefore wanting to connect from the Mac to printer via wireless. In this case you need to select the Default icon rather than the Windows icon. With the Default view selected the MX860 should appear in the list as mentioned above.

Okay. The Add Printer view is set to hide the icons. With the Add Printer window open, click the oval shaped button in the top right corner of the Add Printer window. This will make the icons appear again.

In the Apple toolbar at top, I do see a scanner icon, and it lets me Register Scanner, etc.

This is the Canon IJ Network Scanner alias and yes this for is registering the network scanner. But first you need to add the scanner to the Print & Fax list and this will be possible once you make the Default icon visible in the Add Printer window.

I have a Canon MP610 which worked for a while on my iMac but now won't. I have followed the instructions on eHow for using this printer with a Mac but no success. The printer screen tells me the printer is off-line but it is all plugged in and ready to go. I can print from my PC if I connect printer to that so I know it is working. Any suggestions as to how I can solve this difficulty?

Thankyou so much....

we have been trying to fix this on our Canon MX410 for months.....nowhere before have we found the information about there being two types of print queues set up....

It took me a little while to re-set up though (wireless printer would not show up on Add a printer as described - even though configured and showing up in Canon IJ network tool)....so for the reference of others, here is what I did:

removed all printers from system print & fax window
went to setup (dropdown option) on CanonIJ network tool (note that printer no longer visible once step above performed)
plugged in USB and followed directions on screen for new setup (incl power off etc)
removed USB cable (and power back on)
wireless printer (and scanner) now showing up in Add a printer (selected and called 'location' wireless)
print & fax now showing 2 up canon printers ('wireless' online, and other offline)
changed location name of offline printer to USB
able to test print for each version perfectly (location tells me if USB or not)

YAY!

An offline printer queue can be the result of an incorrect setup. Can you give some more information about which Canon network printer you have. This will help to give you the correct information to follow.

Hi -

I have similar problem trying to install Canon MX860. Everything worked fine until the time to add the printer - my imac couldn't find it. I have firewall on; not sure if that matters? I gave up, for now, and am using USB connection. A few folks at work have macs; I'm going to check with them and circle back to the problem.

The built-in software firewall should permit the network printer to be found, but if you believe it is stopping it then you can temporarily disable the firewall to see if that helps with getting the printer to appear when you select to add.

I have similar problem with MX860 using SL 10.6.4. I've tried disabling the Firewall which does not help.

I first installed MX860 using USB connection. Prints fine. Then I followed forum suggestions of turning off prn, pulling USB cable, and turning prn back on. Prn remains in offline mode. But get this - I can use the printer network utility to see networked prn, actually communicate with prn to do cleanings, BUT CANNOT print anything from apps or self-test page. So it obviously is communicating to the networked prn because there is no cable. The only remaining task is to somehow turn an offline to online. What gives?

I don't know how to get to "selecting to add a printer and using the Default Add Printer view". I go to System Preferences and select Print & Fax. I then select the + btn to add a prn. It then shows me Add Printer window with my Windows network name, followed by a Wndws PC computer name. Nothing comes up for Bonjour Scanner etc. I then tried turning prn off & back on to see if would appear in wndw. No. If I go back to USB prn queue as you say, select it, and follow menus to prn utility, it sees MX860 in Network product list, and type Canon IJ Printer. Thus mac knows its there. So everything seems to hinge on establishing this other "network" prn queue, and yet sw won't let me.

I'm a WXP user so not familiar with the magic right oval. So now my PC and my wife's MacBook are connected to the same wireless networked MX860 printer. Thanks for your patience & input!

This post worked for us. Our Canon MX850 mysteriously quit printing last night for no apparent reason. It was printing earlier in the evening, then it started pausing. Resuming did not resume it. It just paused again. I uninstalled it, but was not able to re-install it over the network (printer connected via ethernet; computer via wireless; all through router). I re-installed it with usb cable and unplugged the usb cable. Then it showed offline. It was the wrong que as was written above. I followed the instructions to add it and it worked like a charm. Kudos!

I have an canon pixma mp600. Out of the blue I was also getting printer these offline messages (they drove me crazy!). It was connected directly to the USB - the computers could not recognize it because it was "offline" I tried several different laptops and desktops - mac and pc- and different usb cables - all to no avail. I tried new drivers and many other things. I also contacted the canon help line - they insisted the usb was faulty on the printer and suggested i buy a new printer!!!
After extensive searching online I found one post suggesting the problem could be solved if the printer was unplugged (not just turned off but disconnected from the power). I unplugged the power cable for 5 minutes and repowered up and voila problem was solved. It worked. Hope this helps someone - dont ask me how it started or why it works but it does.

Thanks for all this, it's been more help than apple AND Canon put together! Apple tried to convince me that my printer's WIFI was broken and Canon that my Airport was broken! Thanks so much!!!!! It worked when I turned my firewall off and reset the the printers on print and fax in the system prefs!!!!!
