i sent a number of people a text message. then during the message thread i wanted to add a person but when i select the > and then select i there is just a list of the original people but no way to add a person. no + sign or anything else.

Thank you very much for clearing that up.
I don't know what technical issues are behind the limitation to only iOS users.
In a world mobile phone market split about 72%/28% in Android's favor and a US market 58%/42% in iOS's favor,
I think it would be very helpful to users to find a way to add Android users to a group text.

If the group has both iPhone and Android users, you cannot add or remove anyone. You will have to create a new group with all the people.

The limitations of a group text with different devices is an SMS/MMS limitation, not an Apple one.
