Did something change on the laptop... was new software installed? Recent macOS or other software updates?
Have you tried restarting the computer? Click (Apple menu) > Shut Down...
You might try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM:
Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
You may need to reset the SMC:
