how do i pair my airtag to my phone? when i go into find my and click add item it just searches for the airtag and it's next to it

Assuming you have pulled the plastic tab as mentioned by someone else and it doesn't work you could follow Apples reset instructions. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT212251
