Unable to verify account name or password

User had our Exchange (Office 365) account installed on his Macbook Air OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6.

We enabled 2 factor authentication to our environment, (Microsoft Authentication app) and kept getting a pop up to enter Exchange password, even though correct one was entered.

So to troubleshoot I deleted the account and trying to add account back, enter the correct info but get a message - unable to verify account name or password, - info is correct as I can log into his account on safari. I even tried logging into my credentials and received the same message.

I'm keen to thinking it is because of the older OS, but wouldn't that have been an issue before?

Correct. Microsoft Office Corporate 365 current release does not work stand alone in 10.13 or earlier.

Multifactor Mac OS X authentication with iCloud and iTunes and AppleTV requires 10.12.4 minimum.

Use this article to see if at minimum you can upgrade to 10.12

If not, refurbished equipment is available via http://www.dvwarehouse.com/ and http://www.macsales.com/ which does support earlier Mac OS X releases.
