iCloud Keychain turns on and immediately off

I can't get keychain to stay turned on any of my iOS or Macs. I turn it on, fill out the password, am asked for device passcode. I put all the information in and the keychain turns on for just a second and then turns off. I've got an iPhone, iPad and 2 Macs all on the latest software(iOS 14.6 & MacOS 11.4), but all of the are demonstrating the same problem....I do have an older iMac on MacOS Sierra 10.12.6 where I successfully turned on the Keychain with no problem using the same Apple ID. It is staying on.

All devices have 2 factor identification turned on, but oddly I have not been sent any verification codes when trying to turn this on. I've just been asked for my passcodes for the iOS devices or my password on my Mac. Anyone have a clue what I may be doing wrong?

Hey there!

Peculiar issue.

I’d probably say resetting your Apple ID password on one of the devices, then, on your other devices, when prompted, enter the new password may fix that problem. (Understand why you wouldn’t want to do that). Either that, or disabling Keychain on ALL devices, then re-enabling it one device at a time, making sure to authenticate, correct any errors, or enter the new password of another device, if asked.

Otherwise, you may need to sign out of each device one at a time and sign in again, they all may ask for different passwords for different devices for authentication.

My guess is, one of them is linked to an old device password, or account detail.

I’m almost certain that if you do this, either all will work just fine, or, on one of the devices, you’ll get an error message, with a prompt to fix it, (Such as an old password or account detail), and the chance to correct it.

Hope that helps!

Disable the passcode for time being from iPhone Use a passcode with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

And sign out Apple ID from affected Mac .

Open system preferences , click on Apple ID icon .

Click on overview in the side bar and click on sign out .

Click on keep a copy .

In the next upcoming pop up , click on keep on this Mac .

Enter the Apple ID and password and click on continue .

The Apple ID is completely removed .

And again you open system preferences > iCloud the Apple ID icon doesn’t not exist , click on sign in .

It will prompt to enter Apple ID , click on next and password , again click on next , a red notification will appear over the system preferences , and the icon starts bouncing .

Enter the admin password and click on ok .
