Confirm MacBook Pro Password - my password isn't accepted

Since upgrading to Ventura 13.1 on my Intel i5 2018 MacBook Pro, I'm asked to confirm my Password so I can still use iCloud. After multiple reboots, the password I use to unlock my MacBook isn't accepted during the passcode confirmation process.

"Confirm your MacBook Pro passcode to keep using iCloud. This passcode also protects access to data stored in iCloud."

I enter my MacBook passcode and the window shakes "no". What am I doing wrong?

I had the same issue after upgrading to Ventura 13.1! got the notice and the little message at the top of Settings. I tried my iCloud password - shakes no. I tried the password I use when I restart my MacBook - shakes no. Restarting didn't work.

I logged into iCloud from Safari using my fingerprint password. Then I logged out and logged back in to iCloud, but manually typed my iCloud password. This time I got a notice that a new device was trying to log into my iCloud account and got 6 digit security code. I entered that and told system to trust this device.

When I went back to settings and clicked on the "confirm your MacBook password" message, I was able to type in my iCloud password and after a couple seconds, the alert cleared.

Hope this is helpful

Generally the Computer Password is different that the Apple ID Password

The Apple ID Password is probably the same password you have used to Log Into this site to post this question

To test this assertion go to My Apple ID and use the password used Here to post this question.

Does it work ?

If the computer password is incorrect / forgotten, there is a way to reset the admin Account Password

Reset Computer Password  for the Administrator Account Password

Intel Computer

1 - Shutdown the computer

1A - Restart computer and immediately hold the two keyboard combo Command  r

1B - If using a Bluetooth Keyboard with Rechargeable Battery - Cable the Keyboard to computer for this unique purpose. Bluetooth Kernel may not load soon enough to execute the 2 keyboard commands

2 - Top Tool Bar >> Utilities >> Terminal

3 - Type resetpassword as one word and no spaces

4 - Press Return key

5 - Follow the prompts and remember the New Password

Apple Silicon M1 / M2 Computer

1 - Choose Apple menu > > Shut Down.

2- Do not attempt a Restart to access this feature. The computer Must be Shutdown and pause before moving forwards

3 - Press and hold the power button on your Mac until you see “Loading startup options.”

4 - Click Options, then click Continue.

5 - Top Tool Bar >> Utilities >> Terminal

6 - Type resetpassword as one word and no spaces

7 - Press Return key

8 - Follow the prompts and remember the New Password

I solved mine by temporary changing MBP password to a simpler version (without special characters).

The exact steps that I took to resolve the issue:

  1. Log out from iCloud on MBP.
  2. Boot into "Loading startup options", then reset password to a simple password without special character. (But I think this step is extra. Can try changing password to simpler version without going startup options).
  3. Restart MBP. Then login to MBP with the new password.
  4. Login iCloud.
  5. Got 6 digit security code from other device.
  6. Trust the device.
  7. Done.

Previously tried the above steps with old complex password, didn't work.

Hope this helps.

After failing to fix it with the proposed solutions from the others in this thread (specifically logging into/out of iCloud on safari), I was able to resolve the problem by:

1) changing my Apple ID password

2) re-authenticating my MBP by signing back into iCloud on the computer (under Apple ID in system settings)

3)then the "confirm your MBP passcode" prompt finally accepted my MBP password

I hope this helps someone else!

I was having all the same issues discussed in this thread on my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro.. Since upgrading it to Ventura.. maybe it was specifically 13.1, not sure.

The suggestion of signing in and out of iCloud did not solve anything for me. Tried both the MacBook password and the iCloud password. (It should be noted that what the prompt appeared to be asking for was the MacBook password, NOT the iCloud/Apple ID password)

I saw this comment by ChrisArr about updating to 13.2, so I checked and I was still on 13.1. I updated to 13.2.

Just for kicks before I responded to that prompt again, I did the whole sign-in/out/in of appleid.apple.com (by manually typing in my password, no biometrics or autofill).. it then accepted my MacBook password on the first shot.

So I'm not sure if the update to 13.2 alone fixed it, or a combination of that along with the login/out(s). But it's resolved for me now!

If you are using another apple device— try from there as well...updating iCloud

You can shut the mac down completely and reboot the Mac and try again and compare your results.

Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

No insight or resolve on your Mac—

Try a A SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies, try again from the is environment...reboot as normal .

P. Phillips, I am also having the same issue with my 2019 MacBook Pro. While reminding the OP that the computer and iCloud passwords are different, suggesting that the user doesn't remember the password isn't terribly helpful.

Leroy, I've tried the steps you have suggested. In addition, I have changed my (Computer) user password and redone all the same steps, as well as the 'last resort' of logging out of iCloud on this (computer) account, shutting down, starting back up, shutting down again, starting up for a second time and then logging back into iCloud on the same account. As soon as iCloud is mostly set up, I get the 'confirm your Mac password' notification *again*, and when I enter the computer password in the resultant dialogue box, I get the 'no' window shake.

Anyone have any additional thoughts? I saw on another forum the suggestion that you have to do a complete factory wipe on the computer and re-install for it to go away, but that seems sort of insane.

Not helpful to the Author of the above,

But maybe helpful the the Owner of this question, which is not the Author of the same above statement.

Technically, the information originally posted in reply to the Owens' question is accurate

This has started happening to me as well after upgrading to 13.1. It seems to be one a week, so maybe Apple implemented something in response to a security vulnerability. It's a mild nuisance. I don't see anything in the release notes (Apple Developer Documentation) but that may be the wrong area to check. I thought Apple had it under their support a slightly more detailed release note.. couldn't find it, but hope what I found points us into the right direction.
