Battery drain after driving

Hi guys,

I noticed fast battery drain after I commute to work. Travel distance is 140-160 km. Apple Service says everything is fine with the watch/battery, etc. No issues detected.

It does not happen every time I travel. Kind of randomly. The only way to stop battery drain is to reboot/switch off/on when come to the destination.

I think it has something to do with GPS being locked on one position and trying to get the correct location or something similar.

Any thoughts or tips beyond restart/reboot?

thanks

Radek

Hi Radwis,

Thanks for reaching out about your battery drain concern for your Apple Watch. Are you actively using GPS on your Apple Watch when this happens? It can use more power for continuous use. If you have turn alerts enabled, disabling them may reduce battery consumption. This setting can be found on in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, under My Watch > Maps.

As far as tips, we always suggest keeping your software updated to the latest version: Update your Apple Watch

Hi Radwis,

To clarify, are you receiving alerts from Maps on your Apple Watch when traveling to work? If so, see if changing those alerts help at all.

If nothing changes and your Apple Watch is already updated to the latest software, we recommend unpairing your Apple Watch to reset it to factory settings. A backup of your Apple Watch data is automatically created when unpairing, so no need to do anything in particular to back up. During the set up, you can choose to restore your data to your watch.

These articles should help:

Back up your Apple Watch

Unpair and erase your Apple Watch

Set up your Apple Watch

If the behavior continue after these steps, contact Apple Support for further assistance: Get support

Thanks SnickZ.,

What do you mean by actively using GPS? When driving I use navigation app, either Maps or Google Maps, but those apps run from the iPhone. The battery drain on the watch happens couple hours after I complete the travel. Typically I start with close to 100% battery, after coming to work it's around 90% and then (sporadically, as I mentioned) it could go down to 10% with next 3-4 hrs. If I reboot the watch after reaching my destination the watch behaves normally with a reasonable drop.

I think that the reboot stops some features to run in the background. I just wonder what that might be and if anybody shows something similar.

Regards
