Battery Drain on iPhone - Apple Maps - iOS 16.x

Since the rollout of iOS 16, my iPhone 13 Pro battery has drained very fast (for example, this morning I was at about 90% at 7:15a and by 11:45a I was at 5% battery and all I used my phone for was a . It appears to happen whenever I use Apple Maps (typically in CarPlay). Apple Maps shows up as the primary app consuming battery in the battery app in settings. I further tested this by deleting Apple Maps (I used Google Maps during this time) and sure enough, my phone battery life was fine. I ended up reinstalling Apple Maps and the problem came back. It seems like users on Reddit and macforums are also complaining about this but I haven't seen any solutions (and I would rather not delete Apple Maps if I can avoid that). Hoping that someone here as an answer and/or that this is on Apple's radar to address in subsequent updates.

I got a brand new phone, problem persists. It’s frustrating as it’s absolutely tied to Maps. You hard kill the app, problem goes away. It never did this pre OS 16.x.

and I have two different vehicles, different radios and both do it. Phone/battery was fine in those same vehicles pre iOS 16.x. I’ve tried new cables, even just used maps with an authentic Apple plug in charger in the 115v socket on my dash. It charges fine, but if you don’t force close Maps after leaving the vehicle, it will absolutely eat the battery in no time

The issue is Apple broke maps.

The battery usage screen even says so; the 3 or 4 times this happened to me maps was 60%+ of my battery usage. My phone would also become hot to the touch. No I never got a High Temp warning, but I can assure you it was abnormal behavior.

That people have the same issue across multiple devices means it’s not a fault with an individual device.

The solution is simply to uninstall Apple maps. I did this several weeks ago and the problem has not reoccurred. I use wireless car play every time I drive, and navigation about 70% of the time.

If Apple is not monitoring discussions.apple.com they are wasting customer feedback.

I really don’t use maps on iPad, but used it once after upgrading to IOS 16 on iPad, since I used it… it began draining my battery, it would go from 100% to 75% in about 40 min. Without using the iPad, noticed that maps was using up power, so I deleted the app. Now it’s back to normal I’m using my iPad normally and gone from 100% to about 96% using it for about an hour and a half.

This is a widespread problem. It might be the corrilaton between iOS 16 and Apple Maps. I think that there are many people out there with slightly older phones that just think it is time for a new phone... that happened to me and a few of my friends. I also know a lot of others that were having the same issue and still are. IPhone 11 and 12s. I had a 12Pro and upgraded to the 14 for the overheating issue. New phone... same problem. I have tried all of the "fixes" listed online. I deleted Apple Maps and it seems to have resolved. I didn't re-install Apple Maps yet.

I use only Apple cords and chargers. Plug in and Magsafe... older and brand new.... nothing helped except deleting the Apple maps app.

I think everyone is consistently identified the issue.

Apple CARPLAY starts up automatically everytime I am in my car driving or even if the car is turned on.

If I do not manually close our APPLE MAPS after exiting the car, the app runs and significantly drains my phone's battery.

If I do manage to remember to close APPLE MAPS my battery lasts 10x longer. Similarly, if there are days when I do not drive my car, the battery life is longer than on driving days.

So far, the only solutions are to not use APPLE MAPS/CARPLAY at all or to remember to close the APPLE MAPS app after driving the car.

I would like to think there is a way for APPLE MAPS to close out after using CARPLAY.

Please post a better solution.

For me on my iPhone13 there is no overheating problem.

I just wondered why Apple Maps is constantly checking my location - I have these small notifications enabled.

It is really checking my location all the time... I think there is a bug or something, idk.

For me it was fixed as soon as I deleted "where is?" and Apple Maps.

I dont use them anyway, as long as they are buggy and drain my battery as **** :(

I stopped responding to that individual. I recognize a bully when I see one. There is obviouisly and issue and instead of either offering possible solutions or staying out of it, they have done nothing but argue that there isn't an issue. We all know that Apple isn't monitoring this site and it is just a forum for Apple users to communicate and possibly help each other out. This individual is not being helpful at all. No point in continuing a conversation.

My issue was resolved by uninstalling both Google and Apple maps and then factory resetting my phone. Once I reinstalled both Apple and Google maps... I haven't had the issue since. But, I do always close out Apple Maps, if I use navigation, once I arrive at my destination. Not saying that anyone or combination was the trick, as I just did it all at once out of frustration. I have a 14 Pro and plug in to use Apple Car Play. I just recieved another update... hoping the problem doesn't reappear. Anyway, I hope you are able to find a solution. Maybe you can try what I did? Agian, I am not sure what exactly fixed it... but for now it is fixed.

ANd we are not alone... I know of many people with 12s and newer that are having issues. But not everyone... so who knows what the real problem really is.

anyway - I hope your day goes well :)

Thank you. You make good points. I shall follow your suggestions. However, it began well before we had the VW, but we were still using Apple CarPlay in our Toyota. It didn’t happen before v16.x of the software - not at all. I’ve never had the phone get so hot to the point that it wouldn’t charge when connected by wire in the car. I can see that the main cause is Apple Maps so is likely the Apple GPS software not switching off appropriately.

I’d still think it is some kind of software “glitch” even if specific to particular cars. Toyota and VW are amongst the most popular current car ranges in the European markets and there are plenty of people in this thread who have this problem. My wife’s iPhone 13 doesn’t have suffer at all - it has stunning battery life - but she isn’t using CarPlay or the SatNav system.

I just discovered this issue. I typically only use Google Maps, but a couple of days ago I was randomly exploring the Apple Maps. Being that I constantly forget to close apps, it was running in the background without me knowing. For days I have been frustrated with my phone’s battery life and discovered it was open and immediately Googled if it affects battery life and here we are. I closed it and my battery is now keeping charge like it normally does.
