Battery Drain on iPhone - Apple Maps - iOS 16.x

Since the rollout of iOS 16, my iPhone 13 Pro battery has drained very fast (for example, this morning I was at about 90% at 7:15a and by 11:45a I was at 5% battery and all I used my phone for was a . It appears to happen whenever I use Apple Maps (typically in CarPlay). Apple Maps shows up as the primary app consuming battery in the battery app in settings. I further tested this by deleting Apple Maps (I used Google Maps during this time) and sure enough, my phone battery life was fine. I ended up reinstalling Apple Maps and the problem came back. It seems like users on Reddit and macforums are also complaining about this but I haven't seen any solutions (and I would rather not delete Apple Maps if I can avoid that). Hoping that someone here as an answer and/or that this is on Apple's radar to address in subsequent updates.

I got a brand new phone, problem persists. It’s frustrating as it’s absolutely tied to Maps. You hard kill the app, problem goes away. It never did this pre OS 16.x.

and I have two different vehicles, different radios and both do it. Phone/battery was fine in those same vehicles pre iOS 16.x. I’ve tried new cables, even just used maps with an authentic Apple plug in charger in the 115v socket on my dash. It charges fine, but if you don’t force close Maps after leaving the vehicle, it will absolutely eat the battery in no time

It doesn't matter. I have mine connected via USB and the phone gets hot and stops charging. This happened with a authentic Apple cord and both of my vehicles and only started happening after iOS 16 update. If I don't force close Maps after unplugging my phone from my CarPlay radio, it will drain the battery from near full charge to 20% in less than 1 hr and the phone is super hot. Again, this issue never happened before the iOS16.x update. iPhone 12Pro. Its really frustrating. Not sure why it does this.

I am also having this issue. I've taken it to the Apple Store twice now and they were saying it was likely the charger that I was using although it was an authentic Apple MagSafe and also Lightening Cable. The second time I went they stated it could be the case I was using or that I have to update to the newest iOS software. I have the latest iOS and this still appears to be an issue.

If you leave the Maps application running it completely eats your battery. This morning I used Maps to get to work and of course, I was in a rush and didn't close the application when exiting my car. I was in meetings all morning and left the phone on my desk. When I returned my battery life had diminished from 95% to 27%, the phone was overheating as well. The battery gets very hot especially if I keep it in my pants pocket while driving.

I hope they find a fix and the answer isn't just "Delete Maps."

Were it an iOS glitch we'd see tens of thousands of similar reports, and we do not.

It may be a combination of cellular conditions in your area or within your vehicle and the charge capacity within your vehicle.

Many people are using CarPlay/Apple Maps all day every day and do not experience this issue.

You may also wish to check with VW and see whether they have any applicable firmware updates for their head end.

what I don’t understand is why I never had this issue pre iOS 16. Post iOS 16.x it does this, never use to. And plugging in the phone doesn’t help as the phone will give me a message that phone not charging, will continue when cool enough. This is in either of my vehicles, new cable, authentic apple cable, old cable… one is a factory radio, on is an aftermarket Sony. Doesn’t matter, and that is with my old iPhone 12 Pro or the iPhone 14 Pro. So considering I’ve tried literally removing all variables, it’s seems like it’s an iOS issue.

now, that said, I did have another theory, is TikTok maybe using a back door through iMaps that is causing the issue, guess I wouldn’t put it past them.

I challenge you to find where I said people's concerns were baseless; I stated if your phone is overheating you will see the message.

The vast majority of owners are not seeing this issue, and yes, tens of millions of iPhone owners use Maps daily, so the question becomes why those that are seeing issues are.

I recommend those experiencing this issue have their phones examined:

or contact Apple Support directly:

as no one here can solve this or direct Apple staff that can.

I’ve had my responses to you deleted multiple times, and not sure why, as I haven’t said anything mean or derogatory… but what ever.

I’ve stated mine gives the heat warning, my phone gets extremely hot. What irritates me the most is that just because others don’t have the issue, it must be a user error, yet I never had this issue with iOS 15. It instantly showed up with iOS 16.xx update. I’m on my third different model iPhone since then, and the problem persists.

and apple can’t find the issue… or just don’t care.

Update. I was asked to remove the Apple Maps from my phone for a few days and use another nav app for a few days. No issues with Waze or google maps no issues. I’ve reinstalled it and the issue came back. They are following up tomorrow. Sounds like I will need to go into the Apple Store.

side note. I’ve found that it you close out maps it at least stops the drain/pauses it.

It has to be a major glitch. I’ve been into the Leicester Apple Store and they ran tests and pronounced that all was fine on my iPhone 12. It isn’t.

Since updating to v16.x and now, worse, changing to a VW ID.3 car, the battery drain and heat from using Apple Maps - even with the app off, and with background app refresh off too, it continues to run in the background and is far too pronounced to put up with.

I trust Apple will get the glitch resolved in v16.5.
