Battery Drain on iPhone - Apple Maps - iOS 16.x

I have had the same vehicle 2020 Chevy Suburban, pre problem and after. Never had the issue before update and only when using apple maps. I have deleted the app because it is too problematic to deal with but hope it gets fixed because I miss Apple Maps.

Ironically my 13 pro is usually fine while driving, even with wireless CarPlay but after I get out of the car it will drain the battery.

Just uninstalled Apple Maps because it had been happening like 2 a week.

As someone who tries to keep my charge between 30-80%, I wonder how much battery life this shaved off my phone :(

I’ve literally never had tik tok on my phone, so it’s not that. Don’t let this guy gaslight you into thinking it’s your fault.

Something is unequivocally bugged with Apple Maps. I uninstalled Apple Maps and started using google maps and my phone has been fine for 2 weeks.

Same issue. When checking battery drain Apple Maps was used for 22 minutes draining 69% battery. It gets very hard and the drain occurs even when not using Maps and closed out (such as overnight, just drained at a slower pace.. 8 hours through the night drained around 60%).

That’s the thing, thin case, outta direct sunlight, not near a heat vent… never installed or used waze and almost never use Google Maps. It’s a bug with iOS that for some reason is affecting me and others and everyone keeps saying it’s not… well, WTF is it then? Because I’ve gone as far as a new phone only to have the same issue. New cables, different radios… none of it make a difference.

The interesting thing for me is that this exact thing is happening on my wife’s phone but it’s not happening on mine. Im curious to see if the rapid security patch that was release today version 16.4.1 (a) has anything to do with a potential fix. It’s likely wishful thinking but hopefully will know soon enough. I know my wife is very frustrated with it. She doesn't want to kill maps every time she is done using it.

Having the same issue on both my iPad and iPhone. Settings>Battery is showing Maps draining at the top of the list on both devices. My guess is It had to be one of the recent updates that screwed it up. Deleting the app just isn't a solution.

Apparently you don’t understand what we are saying here. The battery drain with maps is MASSIVE and will over heat the phone AND even keeping it plugged in will not keep up. We are NOT having the same issue with Waze or Google maps.

Apparently, you still don’t get it because you want to argue that you know what to do. We are all actively using Maps. This is NOT an issue of leaving it running in the background, although I can leave Waze or Google maps running in the background NO PROBLEM. HOWEVER, with maps, whether It’s plugged in my car when I’m navigating or in the background it’s still chews the crap out of my battery. There is a significant issue with the Maps app that does NOT exist with other navigation apps.

And that is just it! We ARE getting the temperature warning message. Phones ARE shutting down due to quickly draining batteries that are difficult to charge due to overheating.

I get it. YOU aren’t having these issues. But stop telling people that they aren’t and that their concerns are baseless.

many people are having issues with their phones heating up, overheating and overall poor battery performance due to something with Maps. Once I deleted that app… no more warning messages due to overheating. No more quick drain on the battery. No issues whatsoever.

telling people that they aren’t experiencing what they in fact ARE experiencing isn’t helpful. It is the opposite.

Having a similar issue. Not using CarPlay (though I’ve rented a few cars recently and used it there), as mine doesn’t support it. And I use google maps for driving. But I get constant background activity from the maps app which drains my 13 pro super fast when not on a charger. Don’t need to be in a car. I also never launch the maps app, I’m guessing other apps call the service and it get stuck in a loop. Never happened before iOS 16. I’m on the latest non-beta version of iOS as of this time (16.5.1).

I've never seen an iPhone draw power faster than it could charge unless your charger is not providing sufficient power (like using an old USB charger in a car or a USB port that does not provide proper power).

Apple doesn't make a car charger, so I'm not sure which charger you are referring to in your statement.

I just returned from a weeklong trip that used Apple Maps via CarPlay on a 14 Pro Max running 16.5.1 for several hours at a time for nine days in a row with no similar issues, so there has to be some additional factor involved.

This was even when dropping in and out of areas with cell coverage, something that usually causes greater battery usage than usual as the phone uses full power to try to connect to a cell tower, but the phone instead showed the "satellite" icon indicating there were no cell towers of any kind it could reach.

As always, your best bet is opening a case directly with Apple Support as they are best equipped to determine what additional factors may be at play:

I’m running 16.4.1 (a) and it still occurs for me. I had to kill the Maps app after using CarPlay this morning - my phone got uncomfortably warm and was draining the battery like crazy

I also see the overheating message. And it becomes really hot in the car, while navigating. Without Maps never, so it is not direct sunlight. Three different cars, both wired and wireless charging.

Updated to 16.5.1 this morning, still an issue, 20% battery drain for 30 minutes of maps on carplay...iPhone 12. Deleted maps again, Google maps no issue.
