Battery Drain on iPhone - Apple Maps - iOS 16.x

Since the rollout of iOS 16, my iPhone 13 Pro battery has drained very fast (for example, this morning I was at about 90% at 7:15a and by 11:45a I was at 5% battery and all I used my phone for was a . It appears to happen whenever I use Apple Maps (typically in CarPlay). Apple Maps shows up as the primary app consuming battery in the battery app in settings. I further tested this by deleting Apple Maps (I used Google Maps during this time) and sure enough, my phone battery life was fine. I ended up reinstalling Apple Maps and the problem came back. It seems like users on Reddit and macforums are also complaining about this but I haven't seen any solutions (and I would rather not delete Apple Maps if I can avoid that). Hoping that someone here as an answer and/or that this is on Apple's radar to address in subsequent updates.

I got a brand new phone, problem persists. It’s frustrating as it’s absolutely tied to Maps. You hard kill the app, problem goes away. It never did this pre OS 16.x.

and I have two different vehicles, different radios and both do it. Phone/battery was fine in those same vehicles pre iOS 16.x. I’ve tried new cables, even just used maps with an authentic Apple plug in charger in the 115v socket on my dash. It charges fine, but if you don’t force close Maps after leaving the vehicle, it will absolutely eat the battery in no time

This has been happening to me also, my battery will get warm to the touch and when I check how much battery has been used by Apple Maps is it around 65% after only a couple hours.

My thoughts are it could be caused by TikTok, it may be tracking locations

if you ever get it resolved, please let me know, using Google maps now- not bad just can’t click on address, need to copy and past addresses

If your phone is warm enough it won’t charge in your car, there is something else wrong, either a highly insulative case or your phone is in direct sunlight; I use my phone for navigation daily and have never, ever seen that message on any iPhone.

As far as battery usage, if you do an Internet search you will find complaints about it, especially Waze, from iPhone and Android users, because Waze isn’t just mapping it also serves up location-oriented ads and reports your travel speeds to their traffic servers and keeps track of you so it can show your location to other Waze users.

Independent tests have shown Waze draws the most power, Google Maps is second, and Apple Maps is the most power-conscious.

I don't know how many people are on this forum but is it possible to know everyone here? I was hoping someone would have had the same experience and found a way around it. In my case, my local Apple store drew a blank with my phone testing out perfectly.

I have a suspicion the issue might have been fixed with the recent update as my battery is holding its charge better in the car these days, although I haven't used maps without plugging in recently.

Looking at reports from people with iPhone 13 and 14, it does seem that Apple have work to do on battery drainage for some users. My wife's iPhone 13 Mini lasts her really well in comparison to my iPhone 12, however.

You said that people say their phones are overheating, when they are not.

you aren’t actually listening to what people are saying before commenting. I understand that this isn’t an Apple Support site. But rather a place for Apple users to assist each other. If you haven’t experienced this issue or don’t know of a fix. Leave it be. Don’t argue just to be “right”. 😊

You are still not getting the point. Overheating doesn’t necessarily mean it is hot enough to trigger the temperature alarm. It could just be very warm to the touch. Brand new iPhone 14 Pro OS 16.5.1 using apple chargers and apple charge cords. Apple map drained my 100% charged phone down to 53% during a 1 hour 45 minute trip and it was being charged at the same time! This is a serious issue!
